Our field trip to Kakaako went swimmingly. The students were exposed to the exact issues they are struggling with in their own cities: traffic, zoning, parking, tax rates, and green space. We walked through a variety of creative spaces that are attracting artists and entrepreneurs. We also saw first hand how Kakaako is combining a variety of zoning allowances that might result in the following scenario: A donut shop with retail in front (commercial zoning), donut production in the rear (light industrial), and the owners renting out the lofts above the shop (residential for citizens whose will no doubt double their weight).
We returned to class to do some writing about zoning our playgrounds and set up individual blogs that will house our writing responses. Click on "Student Blogs" above in order to find your child's blog.
